Co-requisite English Courses

What are Co-Requisite Courses at North Seattle College?

A co-requisite course is a pre-college-level support course taken during the same quarter as a college-level course to help you succeed in the college-level course. This replaces the traditional method of having a prerequisite course you take the quarter before the college-level course.

The co-requisite course model is a way for you to combine a pre-college course (such as ENGL 99, MATH 99) with a college level course (such as ENGL&101, MATH&107 or MATH&146) and complete both at the same time in a single quarter. This allows students to shorten their academic pathways so that they can complete their degree goals in fewer quarters. At North, this option is available for both English and Math classes. This means you can shorten your Math and/or English pathway and finish your degree faster – saving you time and money while receiving extra Math or English support. This replaces the traditional method of having a prerequisite course you take the quarter before taking the college-level course.

Why take a co-requisite with the college-level course instead of a “traditional” prerequisite the quarter before the college-level course?

Taking a co-requisite class at the same time as a college-level course means you can complete your college-level English course in one quarter. On the other hand, taking a “traditional” prerequisite course requires you to complete that pre-requisite before taking the college-level course, which takes two quarters (one quarter for the prerequisite course and a second quarter for the college-level course).

What English co-requisite courses are available at North Seattle College?

  • English 99 (which is paired with ENGL&101)
  • English 197 (which can be paired with any college-level writing-intensive course)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Co-requisite English courses are courses taken concurrently in the same quarter. There are two English co-requisite options:

  • English 99 (a 5-credit pre-college course taken at the same time as ENGL& 101)
  • English 197 (a 2-credit college-level course that can be taken any writing-intensive college-level course)
  • Core English concepts covered in English 99 include active reading, developing a writing process, critical thinking strategies, metacognition, and recognizing and composing well-developed, coherent, and unified texts. English 99 must be taken concurrently with its linked ENGL& 101 course.
  • Core English concepts covered in English 197 include reading, writing, revision, metacognitive habits, and increased awareness of campus resources.
  • English 99: Taking the English 99 with a linked ENGL&101 course is a good option if you are interested in getting extra time, support, and community with your ENGL&101 instructor and classmates. Students who take the co-requisite English 99/&101 take both classes together for the duration of the quarter.
  • English 197: Taking English 197 is a good option if you are simultaneously enrolled in another 5-credit, college-level, writing-intensive course (such as English 102, English 151-153, English 235, Political Science 202, Sociology 215, History 124-126, History 144-146, or Integrated Studies). Students who take the co-requisite English 197 course work weekly with tutors at the Page One Writing Center on writing assignments, reading, or any other coursework with which you need help.
  • To enroll in English 99, you must place into ENGL 99/&101 via the English Directed Self-Placement (DSP) tool or one of the other English placement measures listed in the English Eligibility Form.
  • To enroll in English 197, you must place into ENGL&101 via the English Directed Self-Placement (DSP) tool or one of the other English placement measures listed in the English Eligibility Form.

English 99 is a 5-credit class that meets 2-5 hours per week, depending on whether the class is hybrid, asynchronous, or virtual. Students should expect to spend about 4-5 hours per week on out-of-class assignments for English 99, and the work you do for English 99 will directly support your work in ENGL& 101.

English 197 is a 2-credit class you add onto a 5-credit writing-intensive course. It involves committing to two 30-minute sessions with a tutor at the Page One Writing Center. During these sessions you can discuss any of the coursework from the 5-credit class (assignment prompts, readings, drafting assignments, revision, etc.). In addition to this, students write a 1-page reflection on their tutoring sessions each week and they assemble a final portfolio at the end of the quarter. Students can plan to spend 1.5–2 hours per week on English 197 work, and a little bit more at the end of the quarter.

Both English 99 and English 197 use the numerical 0.0-4.0 grading scale.

  • The ENGL 99/&101 co-requisite is taught and graded as if they were one class. That means whatever grade you earn in ENGL &101 is the same grade you earn in ENGL 99.
  • The English 197 co-requisite is graded as a standalone class. That means you earn a separate grade in English 197 than you do in the class its linked to.

No. English 99 is attached to its designated ENGL& 101, and the two courses are taught together, as if they were a single course. For that reason, English 99 cannot be taken alone.

English 197 is intended only as a supplemental support for a 5-credit course. It cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

Up to 45 units (credits) of pre-requisite classes, including co-requisite or pre-college classes, are covered by financial aid. Additional requirements may apply if you are using the GI bill. Please contact the Financial Aid office for clarification.
