Placement Tests

North Seattle College has many levels of math and English classes to meet a variety of educational and personal goals. All new and current students have the opportunity to take a math and English placement test at North. The test is given on a computer (but does not require experience using a computer).

New Students

Once you’ve completed the admission step and have your SID/PIN#, then pay your fees for testing and check the testing calendar for a time to test. Remember to bring valid photo ID with you.

When To Take the Tests

You do not need to schedule your English or math placement test. You can take English or math or both at the same time. (There is only one fee if you take both together.) Just drop in to the Testing Center to start your test anytime during Placement Testing walk-in hours.

See the Testing Calendar for times on specific dates.

Cost

The cost for each placement test session is listed on the fees page. English and math tests can be combined into one session.

  • You can pay for each placement test session at the Cashier’s Office during business hours or register for the exam using item number TEST (this is similar to a course item number) and then pay online.

To register with your Student ID and PIN number, please visit MyNorth.
  • To pay for your test, use the online payment system. Please bring your placement test session receipt to the testing center when you come to test.
  • Please bring a quarter for the locker you will use to store your belongings while testing (quarter is refunded).

  • Duplicate copies of mailed test scores are $3.00 each. Additional charges apply for those who need to retake the exams or appeal the English test.

Starting at First Math Level Instead of Testing

You may choose to start from the first math level without taking the math placement (COMPASS) test. There is no prerequisite required to enroll in MATH 081. (If you are receiving financial aid through the Veterans Affairs Office or other programs, please check with your program to see if it requires math placement testing — even if you would like to enroll in the first level.)
