History
Discipline Description

History is the study of past issues, events, institutions and personalities — in the context of time, place, and human/world issues, events and movements. History considers how the past has been interpreted and how those interpretations have changed over time.

The focus of history courses can include:

• introductory/survey courses covering wide sweeps of history (U.S., World, Asian)

• history at regional levels (history of the Caribbean, Southeast Asia)

• history of particular countries (Germany, India)

• history of periods of time (World War II, Classical Greece)

• history of groups (gay America, Chicano/Latinos)

• history of other disciplines (mathematics, philosophy)

Studying history helps students develop lifelong learning skills: information literacy, critical reading and thinking skills, expository writing skills, perspective, problem-solving and collaborative skills.
