Faculty and Staff Development Day

Faculty and Staff Development Days are held each Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter for faculty and staff to attend department and division meetings, and to attend workshops and lectures for professional growth. 

Faculty and staff can apply to present a workshop or lecture on Development Day, either in-person, online, or hyflex. As Development Day approaches, the Development Day Advisory Committee will send out a survey asking for presenters to apply. 

 

The dates for the 2025-2026 Development Days are:

Fall 2025: Wednesday October 29th

Winter 2026: Thursday February 5th

Spring 2026: Tuesday May 5th

12 PM – 1 PM: Brown Bag Lunch Event

A landscape of big dreams and cold realities: A brief history of the local neighborhood, from the end of the last ice-age through the founding of the College. 

In-Person Session, Library Seminar Room LB2208 

It was a land of plenty for the early Paleoindian people, and a sacred place for the local Native American tribes. It was the first suburban neighborhood in Seattle, the home of a vibrant Japanese-American community, and an eclectic post-war neighborhood. It was the site of a mid-century mall, the route of a 12- lane freeway, and finally, the home of the modern College. Join John Figge for a brief tour of 15,000 years of local history, from the end of the last ice age through the founding of the modern College.

Introduction to Creative AI Image Tools From an Art and Design Perspective 

In-Person Session, Room IB 3406 

Spice up your classes with AI image tools, featuring NSC art faculty member Bo Choi. In this presentation, she will cover the variety of AI image generative tools, from Google's Nano Banana to Adobe's Firefly, and show samples of the outcomes. 

 Drawing from her experience in fashion design and innovative digital art, she will show you how emerging technologies can expand creative possibilities in your classes. 

 

Financial Aid Basics for Faculty and New Staff 

Online Session 

This presentation will cover the basics of FAFSA and WASFA - the two financial aid applications available for students - and the general financial aid process at Seattle Colleges. The purpose of this workshop is to strengthen classroom support for students navigating funding by faculty and new staff gaining an understanding of FAFSA/WASFA and where to direct students for support. Presented by Andrea Dahl and Tsetsen Anuurad.

Joyous Explorations into Pressbooks   

Online Session Districtwide 

Join Librarian Zola Mumford and Instructional Designer Rebecca Brown for an engaging one-hour exploration of Pressbooks, an openly accessible digital book platform. The presentation includes a book navigation demo and helpful information about finding Pressbooks. We'll also discuss how Pressbooks fits into the Open Educational Resources landscape. While the presentation will not cover Pressbooks creation, there'll be time at the very end to create your OpenWA Pressbooks account. 

 

Can't make it to the October 29th presentation from 1:00 to 2:00 PM? No worries! There'll be another virtual Pressbooks presentation on November 19th from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

Futurism in the Age of AI 

Online Session 

Discussion based on slides based on 2 chapters (AI and Futurism) from an upcoming OER textbook authored by Bunge (the presenter). Provides models for how to navigate the uncertain future roiled by AI. Draft chapters will be made available. Facilitated by Bob Bungee.

Advising: The More You Know

Join us for a comprehensive overview & discussion about the general advising officeLinks to an external site.! Learn about who we serve, how we support students, and how we can work collaboratively to support each other. Participants will explore our website and tools, learn about Starfish referrals and communication processes, gain insight into how we can work together to foster student success, and ask questions! Facilitated by Kara Schwartz, Jillian Fisher, and Caleb Martin.

Getting Started with Digital Accessibility

Join us for a hands-on workshop designed to help you take your first steps toward creating more accessible digital course materials. After a brief introduction to what digital accessibility means and why it matters, this session will focus on practical support and guided setup so you can confidently begin improving accessibility in your own courses. Hosted by Julia Anderson, Jessica Slivinski, and Shawn Rodriguez.
