North Seattle College is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus climate for all staff and students. Per Seattle Community College District Policy:

No student shall, on the basis of his or her disability, be excluded from participation, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subject to discrimination under any District program, service or activity. The Seattle College District is committed to providing qualified students with a disability an equal opportunity to access the benefits, rights, and privileges of District services, programs and activities in an accessible setting appropriate to the student's needs in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the disability laws of the State of Washington.

This goal is fundamental to its belief in social justice. To achieve this goal, faculty and staff work together to remove barriers in physical access, communication, attitudes, and policies that can prevent students from taking part in programs.

In addition, the college provides reasonable accommodations determined for each student on an individual basis by the DS Director and designed through an interactive process with a student to ensure all academic have been considered.  

In order to receive services for disabilities, a student must provide medical, psychological, or psycho-educational information (documentation) that conforms to the guidelines stated in Documentation Guidelines.

How Students Access Services

1. Self-identify to the University. Students are encouraged to register with the DS office and make requests of the faculty in a timely manner to create the best opportunities for their own success.
2. Request services from DS and engage in the interactive process.
3. On a quarterly basis the student must request that there Letter of Accommodation (LOA) be sent to their instructors. The responsibility of providing the academic accommodations does not go into effect until the letter is presented.

Confidentiality

It is an individual’s choice whether to disclose the nature of his/her disability to faculty. Asking a student for more details regarding their disability is not permitted as the confidentiality of medical information must be maintained. DS can and will discuss student information with instructors related to the facilitation of accommodations.

Although the DS Office encourages all students to request their LOA as early as possible, students have the right to request accommodations at any point in the quarter.  Services are not retroactive. If a letter is presented in the middle of the quarter adjustments are only required from that day forward.
