Placement and Prerequisites

College in the High School (CHS) students meet the same placement and/or course prerequisites as any other students who attend North Seattle College. High school teachers will be responsible for verifying that course placement or prerequisites are met and may perform the verification themselves or ask their high school registration or counseling office to assist them.

What’s the Difference Between Placement and Prerequisite?

Placement. After students are admitted to the college, their readiness to enroll in college-level math and English courses may be determined through a placement process that includes, but is not limited to, cumulative high school grade point average, your prior course history, instructor permission, or completion of the North Seattle College Directed Self-Placement (DSP) tool. In most cases your teacher will be able to give you the okay to sign up for class without requiring a test score or participation in North’s DSP.

Prerequisite. This is when courses appear in a sequence, and you must take the earlier course before you can sign up for the latter. For example, if you want to enroll in Biology 2, you’d first need to have completed Biology 1. (Although sometimes instructor permission is adequate in this case as well.)

The specific placement and prerequisite requirements for NSC College in the High School courses are listed below. Please reach out to your high school teacher or the HSC College in the High School program if you have questions.
