What is English 197?

English 197 is a 2-credit, college-level course designed to support students taking writing-intensive courses at NSC. In the course you will work weekly with tutors at the Page One Writing Center on writing assignments, reading, or any other coursework with which you need help.

Who Can Take English 197?

Students who wish to take English 197 must be simultaneously enrolled in another 5-credit, college-level, writing-intensive course. Such courses could include, but are not limited to:

  • English 101 (see note below); English 102; English 151-153 (Creative Writing); English 235 (Technical Writing)
  • Political Science 202
  • Sociology 215
  • History 124-26
  • History 144-46
  • Integrated Studies

Note: Adding English 197 to English 101 is not the same as taking English 99/101.

What Will You Do in English 197?

  • Meet twice weekly with tutors at the Page One Writing Center
  • Write a 1-page reflection each week on your tutoring and learning
  • Submit a final portfolio of selected weekly reflections, a revised assignment from your writing intensive course, and a final reflective essay looking back on your growth over the quarter.
