LSAMP Student Ambassador Program
The vision of the North Seattle College LSAMP Student Ambassador program is to create opportunities for Underrepresented Minority (URM) STEM students to hone their professional skills, grow in leadership, and discover how they can incorporate these leadership skills into their STEM careers. Additionally, LSAMP ambassadors will engage in outreach activities for the purpose of promoting LSAMP to their instructors, classmates and other North Seattle College students. LSAMP Ambassadors will also engage in quarter long leadership projects with the support of LSAMP staff.
While the outreach portion of this opportunity will be overseen by the LSAMP navigator, the leadership and professional development portion will be a learning experience driven by the student’s individual goals and interests. Students will participate in leadership experiences spanning from mentoring, participating in student committees, leading workshops and helping brainstorm and plan LSAMP events.
Purpose and benefits of the LSAMP Student Ambassador program:
- Professional Development – The primary goal of this program is to create opportunities for students to grow professionally while still in college. This will entail students identifying yearlong professional development projects alongside the LSAMP navigator, mapping out goals and objectives to accomplish their projects, then utilizing on and off campus resources to accomplish these goals. Throughout this process students will acquire skills such as project planning, networking, garnering resources, preparing and delivering presentations, conducting workshops, collaborating with teammates, adhering to timelines and due dates, to mention a few.
- Leadership and representation - Empower students to grow as leaders and as representatives of the LSAMP program. This program will also function to increase the diversity of students that are highlighted in our STEM classrooms.
- Peer engagement and collaboration - Boost peer contact and engagement through promotion of LSAMP to instructors, classmates and other students at North Seattle College. Ambassadors will also collaborate with their peers to lead LSAMP workshops, outings and events.
- Creativity - Opportunity for LSAMP students to find creative ways to execute their projects, collaborate with their peers, make LSAMP an even more welcoming and inclusive space for all URM STEM students.
- Enrollment – Our college has quite a few students that are yet to declare an academic program. The LSAMP Ambassador program will be a conduit to tell students both about LSAMP and about STEM programs of study.
