AANAPISI Peer Mentor 

Description:

AANAPISI Peer Mentors Serve as a peer-leader to students in the AANAPISI program, funded by a U.S. Department of Education Asian American, and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) grant. Peer Leaders are responsible for maintaining a welcoming and inclusive AANAPISI space, orienting students to the space and its resources, and assisting with the planning and execution of community building events with AANAPISI students in order to create a stronger sense of belonging for this community at NSC. AANAPISI Peer Mentors will receive training from Student Leader and Multicultural Programs staff and/or the AANAPISI Grant staff on leadership and mentoring skills and how to help peers navigate basic college processes that can sometimes be barriers to student success. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Attend a 1-2 week student worker training in Summer 2023 before the start of the next academic year (Fall 2023)
  • Attend 1-hour weekly AANAPISI Staff meetings
  • Participate in quarterly or yearly campus committees or forums if needed
  • Builds and maintains authentic and reciprocal relationships with a cohort of 6-8 AANAPISI students each per quarter and making referrals and providing assistance as needed
  • Co-facilitate 2-3 Community Builder Events and/or Educational Workshops devised to increase engagement, self-confidence, leadership, and a strong sense of identity and pride among A&PI students per quarter
  • Assists with promotion, set-up/break- down and facilitation of workshops, trainings, cultural events, and celebrations
  • Serving as liaisons to other campus programs and student affinity groups serving A&PI
  • Participate in outreach and recruit initiatives for new potential students at campus events
  • Serve as a student representative on the AANAPISI Steering Committee
  • Staff the The AANAPISI Resource Center (TARC) as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year experience 
  • Currently enrolled or eligible to enroll in NSC
  • Demonstrated knowledge on the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AANAPI) student experience and how to address needs
  • Has a minimum 2.5 GPA and in good academic standing 
  • Must be able to work at least 10-hours per week 
  • Lived experience or demonstrated knowledge of the lived experience similar to those of AANAPI students and systemically non-dominant students (e.g. individuals who were first in their family to attend college, grew up in low-income households, BIPOC individuals, individuals with disabilities, etc.)
