Internship Overview

Internships are work-based learning opportunities that can be a critical component of a successful transition into the workplace for students upon graduation. Different from entry-level jobs, internships have an intentional focus on a student’s learning and focus on specific projects rather than overall business operations.

Review the “Developing an Internship Program” by the University of Washington for guidance on how to structure your internship, hire diverse candidates and best supervise your interns.

Post Your Position

All internship and job postings should be input on Handshake – this ensures that students from across all of our Seattle Colleges system can view and apply for your role. If you are only targeting students from a specific major or college, you can make that restriction when posting your position.

View the Seattle Colleges Handshake for Employers page for information on how to get started. For questions about using Handshake, review Handshake’s Employer Resources.

Academic Credit Requirements

As the institution awarding academic credit, North Seattle College has several requirements for experiential learning experiences. Experiences must roughly align with the academic term – 8 weeks of overlap (6 weeks over summer quarter) are required. Your student will need to complete a minimum number of hours throughout the academic quarter (typically 99 hours total, with a minimum of 33 hours for one academic credit). Finally, you will need to support documentation, including completing a Learning Agreement at the beginning of the quarter, supporting the student in developing learning objectives, tracking hours worked and completing performance evaluations. All required forms will be supplied by the college or your student directly.
