I was born and raised in Kenya and moved to the US right before I turned 18. Living in different countries (and several homes) as a young person gave me a deep appreciation for people, culture and travel. To no surprise, my favorite thing to do is experience culture through travel, food, conversation and art. In a perfect world I would be a travel blogger. Maybe someday that dream will become a reality.
I studied Engineering at Iowa State University and then decided to work in colleges to make STEM more accessible for students that look like me. This is my life’s calling. I am here to support and advocate for you. Please reach out with any questions or needs you may have. Nothing brings me more joy than supporting students, especially you!
Katherine Yuko Fry

Katherine was born and raised in Seattle, where she graduated from Chief Sealth International High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Geography with a Certificate in Geographic Information Sciences from Western Washington University and her Master of Arts in Educational Studies from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Katherine's research has centered on using spatial analysis and data visualizations to investigate how racial segregation and opportunity hoarding impacts BIPOC students' access to educational opportunities across the Seattle Public School District. Driven by her passion for examining the interdisciplinary connections of STEM and social sciences, Katherine's professional endeavors have continuously centered on advocating for equity in STEM education and professional development programming. Outside of her research, some of Katherine's favorite coursework in undergraduate were mountain/pyro-geography (wildfires), environmental philosophy, and the natural history of the Salish Sea.
North Seattle College LSAMP students can meet with Katherine in person or online via Zoom for academic and professional support. In addition to advising, students can visit her office for snacks, listen to 80s J-Pop, and study!
In her free time, Katherine enjoys live music, visiting museums, nature walks by the ocean, and volunteering for Japanese (Nikkei) community events.
