Preparation & Advancement

Preparation

A high school diploma or GED and formal or on-the-job training are needed by healthcare technology management technicians. Employers prefer applicants who have completed a training program in electronics or medical technology at a professional-technical school or 2-year college.

Good communication skills are necessary, because repairers are called upon to provide technical assistance and instruction on equipment and maintenance to medical personnel. Experience is helpful and may be required by some employers.

Certification

Certification is voluntary for general HTM technicians. For those who specialize in radiology and clinical laboratory equipment, certification is available through the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. Certification as a technician (CBET) can be helpful in finding a job

Advancement

An HTM technician may advance to work as a highly specialized technician with special training or equivalent experience in lab equipment (LES) or radiology equipment (RES), doing skilled work of considerable difficulty and holding certification in these areas. HTM technicians may also advance into management.
