Library Assistant
Description:
This is an on-campus job with no remote work options, open only to students with work study awards. During summer quarter 2025, applicants must be able to work shifts during the library’s open hours of 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Thursday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist patrons at the circulation desk; check out items and check in returned items using the library's computer system; provide quick directional information.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all patron information and records
- Help library employees with opening and closing procedures as needed
- Shelve various library collection materials. Shift and redistribute shelved materials to meet space considerations as needed.
- Shelf-read assigned areas in the library collections, ensuring that items are in order. Assist with the inventory of library collections.
- Assist students with setting up their computer login credentials and with using the printer/photocopier/scanner.
- Search for lost or missing library collection items.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Educational Benefit:
- Besides earning money to help offset educational costs, work study students employed by the library will develop abilities applicable to future job situations, such as customer service, office work, and basic computer and research skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
Previous library or office experience helpful, but not necessary; however, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate a pleasant, helpful work attitude.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, including how to file materials accurately using the Library of Congress classification system.
- Have basic computer skills.
- Follow workplace procedures and policies.
- Pay attention to details, and switch to different tasks as department needs and priorities change.
- Be punctual and work a set quarterly schedule during the library’s open hours.
Physical Demands:
This job may require employees to stand or sit occasionally for long periods. Employees will have to reach, bend, lift, kneel, and grasp when shelving, shelf-reading, dusting, and cleaning. Employees may be expected to push and pull heavy book carts and may occasionally have to lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
