Preparation & Advancement

Preparation

Sustainable and conventional energy and control technicians need a high school diploma or GED and formal education or on-the-job training. Typically, preparation involves a 2-year training program in electronics technology to learn principles of electronics, testing and repair of equipment. Employers prefer employees with some formal education. Certification and related work experience are preferred by companies with very complex equipment.

Advancement

With a background in sustainable and conventional energy and control, a worker may become an industrial/maintenance technician, technical sales specialist, field service technician or substation operator apprentice, and, with further education, an electronics engineer.
