Discipline Description

Biology is the science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution. The field of biology includes a diverse range of subjects including cell biology, genetics, botany, zoology and ecology.

Understanding biology helps us function as informed citizens — thinking critically about important environmental issues like climate change and endangered species, and making educated decisions about controversial topics like stem cell research and genetically modified foods. The study of biology equips us to intelligently consider our health and that of our families and better understand, appreciate and care for the living world around us.
