What is the Student Collective Program?

A Student Collective is a student-led group supported by ACO Navigators that brings together students who share a culture, identity, or background. Student Collectives are designed to support student retention, health, and well-being by cultivating a strong sense of belonging and community within North Seattle College. Through ongoing monthly meetings, peer mentorship, leadership development opportunities, and culturally responsive programs and events, Student Collectives create supportive spaces where students can build relationships, grow as leaders, celebrate their identities, and engage meaningfully with the college community.

ACO- Student Collective Peer-Mentor – Job Description (Roles & Responsibilities)

ACO Student Collectives Peer Mentors cultivate a student-centered community that advances cultural belonging, leadership, and academic success through Student Collectives and peer mentorship.

Goals

  • Increase students’ sense of belonging through culturally grounded communities. Improve student retention and completion rates, particularly for BIPOC and First-Generation students.
  • Expand leadership development opportunities within Student Collectives.
  • Develop a sustainable Peer Mentorship Program that promotes identity development and student success.
  • Ensure equitable access to funding and resources for all Student Collectives.

Students interested must be available September 21-25th for early onboarding.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Mentee Caseload: Peer mentors will support a designated group of mentees through regular check-ins, providing guidance, encouragement, and connections to campus resources. Peer mentors will also maintain accurate records of student engagement and relevant program data.
  • Student Collective Facilitation: Peer mentors will co-plan, coordinate, and facilitate Student Collective meetings with the Collective Leadership that foster community, encourage active participation, and support student learning and leadership development.
  • Culturally Responsive Programming: Peer mentors will collaborate with Student Collectives and ACO staff to develop and implement culturally responsive programs, events, and activities that celebrate and affirm students' diverse identities, cultures, and experiences of students.
  • Outreach and Student Engagement: Peer mentors will assist with outreach efforts to increase awareness and participation in Student Collectives. Responsibilities include planning and participating in outreach initiatives, engaging with students across campus, and promoting opportunities for involvement
  • Office and Program Support: Peer mentors will provide operational and customer service support in the Equity and Welcome Center, including welcoming students, sharing information about campus resources, and assisting with program and office activities as needed.
  • Attend Ongoing Team/1:1 Meetings & Collective Circles: Peer mentors are expected to actively participate in regular team meetings and one-on-one supervision meetings. These meetings provide opportunities for professional development, program updates, collaboration, problem-solving, and reflection on mentoring practices. Peer mentors will engage in discussions, share insights and challenges, contribute to team goals, and apply new knowledge and skills to support student success.
  • Participate in Quarterly Trainings: Peer mentors are expected to actively participate in quarterly student training and development opportunities that are essential to strengthening leadership, mentoring, communication, and cultural competency skills.

Required Experience:

  • Work-study eligible
  • Currently enrolled or eligible to enroll in NSC
  • Will be attending NSC for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters for academic year 2026-27
  • Has a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and is in good academic standing
  • Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week
  • One year of experience as a college student
  • Demonstrated knowledge related to belonging, retention, completion, and identity

development, particularly for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and First-Generation students' experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lived experience or demonstrated knowledge of the lived experience similar to those of the student collectives and systemically non-dominant students (e.g. individuals who were first in their family to attend college, grew up in low-income households, BIPOC individuals, individuals with disabilities, etc.)
  • We are looking for Peer Mentors for the following Collectives: ALAS- Association of Latin American Scholars, BSU- Black Student Union, and APIC- Asian, Pacific Islander Collective
