HVAC is an abbreviation for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. HVAC professionals are the trades people who ensure that HVAC equipment and systems are properly designed, installed, repaired and maintained. A technician may specialize in installation or in maintenance and repair in either heating or air conditioning.
The importance of HVAC work goes beyond keeping residents and workers comfortable in their homes and places of employment. HVAC systems are necessities for medical centers, food refrigeration, high-technology and certain industrial and manufacturing operations. Most recently, due to the emphasis on the environment and conservation, it is also critical that energy-efficient HVAC systems be installed and maintained correctly.
Heating and cooling system mechanics use a variety of tools, including hand and power tools, pipe cutters and benders, and torches. They also use voltmeters, pressure gauges and other testing devices.
