Employment Information

Wages

In Washington, the median entry-level wage for healthcare technology management technicians is $19.41/hour. Nationally, the median wage is $17.09/hour.

Working Conditions

HTM technicians work in hospitals, clinics, research labs and for medical equipment manufacturers and service organizations. Employees generally work daytime hours, but are sometimes on call and required to work overtime if an important piece of medical equipment malfunctions.

The work is indoors, often in a patient environment, with the potential for exposure to disease and equipment contaminants. Because of the urgent need for functioning equipment, work can be very stressful. Workers may need to travel to perform repairs.

Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rapidly expanding healthcare industry and elderly population mean increasing demand for sophisticated medical equipment and, therefore, good employment opportunities. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of jobs is projected to increase 10 percent statewide and 6 percent nationally. HTM was recently named one of the top 30 career choices by U.S. News & World Report.
