Job Description

Engineering Graphics and Design Technology refers to drafters who prepare technical drawings and plans, used as visual guidelines for production and construction of buildings. Drawings provide technical details and specify dimensions, materials and procedures for construction.

For a modern career in engineering graphics and design technology, entry-level candidates must be versed in multiple versions of computer-aided design (CAD) programs. CAD, until recently, has been the industry standard where drafters create, store and revise drawings electronically. Although drafters use CAD extensively, they also need knowledge of traditional drafting tools and techniques in order to fully understand and explain concepts.

Now, employees need to be prepared to visualize and manage information using Building Information Modeling (BIM) — an evolving process of using 3-D, real-time, dynamic building modeling software applications to generate, manage and revise building data. This is done both before and during a building’s life cycle to increase productivity in design and construction. BIM encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components. BIM goes beyond learning to use new software, moving to challenge the definition of traditional architectural phases and providing for wider data-sharing.
