Broadband Cable
Preparation & Advancement

For work in broadband, a high school diploma or GED is required, a training program in electronics, and on-the-job training. Technicians have contact with customers, so a pleasant personality, neat appearance and good communication skills are important. You need good sound and color acuity, must be in good physical shape for carrying and climbing ladders, and have a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Military experience with communications equipment is highly valued by employers.

Broadband technicians in the cable industry can advance through multiple levels. They start out performing residential service but can advance to business-based services, fiber optics and head-end technical services, which require advanced Cisco training. One of the large local cable companies has 6 levels of technicians.
