I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) is a special program for ABE and ESL students who are interested in job training classes. In I-BEST programs, there are two instructors – one for job training and one to help you improve your basic learning skills while you earn college credits.

The I-BEST Format

In an I-BEST classroom, a career training and a basic skills instructor teach together to help you learn better and faster. That way, you can be learning job-based skills while improving skills such as reading, writing and time management. There are up to 5 additional hours of classroom support in skills practice with a basic skills instructor offered each week. You’ll get preparation for immediate employment after finishing the I-BEST program and/or preparation to continue your education.

Stapleton Provides Extra Help So Students Can Reach Their Goals

portrait
Sara Stapleton
ESL & I-BEST Instructor

Sara Stapleton says her job as an I-BEST instructor is to make herself unnecessary, giving students that little bit of extra help they need to succeed at college-level work.

Kudos

I took ESL classes at Shoreline and then went into the I-BEST accounting program at North. Sara Stapleton guided five of us through the program — going with us to class, meeting with us before and after, explaining things to us and helping us understand the accounting instructors’ main points. All of us got good grades with Sara’s help. I worked hard, learned a lot and graduated after a year. Three graduates went to work, but two of us went on to get an AA degree in accounting at North. And now I am transferring to Central Washington University for a BS in IT. That will allow me to work in either IT or accounting after I graduate.

The I-BEST program is a great opportunity for students with English as a second language. It helped me a lot. I appreciate North Seattle College and hope the I-BEST programs continue.
